The end of a series | the Manley series

This is the end of a series and the beginning of something new
So, here we are my friends, this is the final chapter and hence, the end and closing of the series. Hope you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you, or more so. I’m going to be taking a few days of break and then I’ll be back with something new, hope you will join me for this also. And don’t keep it all to yourself now, share and tell. Thanks a lot for joining me here. Here is chapter 28 of the book called, How to train a wild puppy dog named, Manley. Enjoy.

Chapter Twenty-Eight
The proposal. Down but not out.

We were descending the steps at the courthouse when I lost my footing and fell, my well-choreographed script played out just as planned, I rolled down the last three steps to the pavement below, Libby screened and hobbled down the best she could and stood over me looking into my sneaky eyes and me grinning all over my face, she offered me a hand up, I took it, not so much for the support role which she had intended but more for what I was about to do next. I got "up" to my knees from the position where I was lying there on my back. Still holding on to her right hand with my left hand I flipped open the tiny black box in my right hand. "Libby sweetheart.” I said, “will you marry me?"
With her left hand covering her mouth and her body convulsing, pulsating in a cross mix of her trying to suppress the laughter and the tears, she did manage to squeeze out a couple: “yes, yes, y...”
Before I stopped her in her tracks with a hot lingering kiss. To much oohs, Ahs and clapping cheers.
We left the courthouse and headed for home, we were both going back to my place downtown. We drove by the store in Cote des Neige, she wanted just to see the place. She doesn't seem to have the same strong feeling of resentment about the shop as she does the house, said she was going to call Selma, Kamal's wife and try to talk to her about it, see if she has any ideas that could get the place up and running again. “I don't want to have anything to do with it either, but Selma is a stranger in a strange new country who suddenly found herself alone with a young family to care for all on her own. She is going to need all the help that she can get.” She said that she was willing to reach out to her brother's wife and help in any way that she could.
“She's a good girl,” she said, “she didn't deserve any of this.”
Libby was released and placed into my care and protection after the hospital had managed to assure themselves that that was in fact, in the best interest of the patient. Or maybe it was because they were left with no other option, after Libby's insistence that she was not going back to spend another night in that house, ever again.
Libby is now staying in my spare room, recovering quite nicely indeed, everyone has been in agreement that, so far, she is doing quite well, and she really likes her new friend: Doctor Peppers, the new puppy I'd bought her as a welcome home present. It is actually more than just a welcome home present, it's in fact, a lot more than a pet for her at this point, it is aiding her along in the recovery effort in the long walk back to her optimal health.
Dr. Peppers is as cranky as I am this evening, he is whining and skipping around the apartment.
After the long and hectic day at the courthouse, Libby has had more than enough activities already for today to compensate for her daily exercises, so it's now my turn to walk the Doctor. Dr. Peppers that is.
As we turned the corner, the puppy and me, I noticed the four women standing there on the pavement near the park benches smoking and chatting away, and they were not the least bit discreet either, I knew right away what was the topic of their discussion, the news was spreading like wildfire.
“He proposed to her on the steps of the courthouse.” “During the trial of her parents.” One of those blabbermouths exclaimed.
“So did she accept?” Another wanted to know. “Did he go down on one knee?”
And then another one said, “if a guy is going to propose to me he better be doing it right, or else, no dice.”
Then yet another thought that she knows the best time and ways of doing it, on New Year's eve or new year’s day, and sealed with a kiss, the discussion continued as they started to fade out of my earshot.
I couldn't help but wonder how many of those know-it-alls have actually done it and is still basking in the after-glow, after-effects of the whole process, hmm.
Meanwhile, Doctor Peppers hoist a leg up on the signpost and shot off a few squirts of pee, couldn't be more perfect, the timing. I wanted to hear more from these toddle tails. So, I even allowed him to sniff around as much as he wanted to, before moving on, slowly, very slowly - until I was too far out of range to hear anything more from them.
It didn't really matter to me though, what they were thinking, saying or feeling on the subject. I guess it's just one of those strange phenomena where you hear or see something familiar and by reflection, you just have to react. Sort of like, you hear your name or someone speaking in a familiar dialect, in a crowd of people who all speak other languages, it’s like music to your ears, that familiar dialect will grab you and caused you to dig in closer for more. So that was all that that was meant to be for me, I just went along on my way walking the doctor, Dr. Peppers.
We went right along singing away:
One man went to mow, woof, woof,
Went to mow the meadow, woof, woof,
One man and his dog, woof, woof,
Went to mow the meadow, Woof, woof.    (Adapted, I lay no claim to this)
Am I just imagining things here or is there really a bit more pep in both our steps today? Both Dr. Pepper and me?
                              The end

That’s it my friends. Thank you for your support and enthusiasm. Looking forward to having you join us on the next project, coming soon. See you in a few days.
